About Studio ’13
Articulate Studio ’13 consists of a suite of four programs:
- Presenter ’13
- Quizmaker ’13
- Engage ’13
- Replay ’13
Articulate Studio ’13 is the update to Studio ’09. Released in 2013, it remains one of the most popular authoring tools. It will eventually be phased out altogether with the release of Articulate 360, and as support for Adobe Flash is systematically phased out.
About
One of the major selling points of Articulate Studio ’13 when released was that eLearning courses created with this new version of the software were supposed to be HTML5 compliant, mainly to support mobile usage which was a big demand at the time, and as Flash was still actively used and supported on desktop browsers. Unfortunately, the HTML5 output from Studio in anything but the most basic presentation is all but useless, and it is glitchy at best on desktops, and many times doesn’t work at all on mobile devices.
There was also an app released, called “Articulate Mobile Player” or AMP for short. This was only supported on iPads and Android devices, not iPhones. The “mobile player” was a way of playing courses in flash on mobile devices, but even this drastically fell short for one major reason: the only way you can use it on an LMS is if you use xAPI, and almost no learning management systems at the time supported Tin Can.
Studio essentially works collectively by integrating the applications as PowerPoint add-ons, although they can be used independently to create material. This decreased the learning curve and made the creation of courseware easier by essentially making PowerPoint the main authoring tool, and offering pre-made quiz and interactive templates in which you input your material. This is both a strength and a weakness.
Pros:
- Create your courses using PowerPoint
- Templates readily available
- Easily create quizzes and interactions using intuitive interface
- Lifetime (“perpetual”) license after purchase
Cons:
- The HTML5 output is all but useless
- Glitchy due to all the integration required to make it work
- Collaborative workflow is difficult
- Does not fully integrate with PowerPoint
